The Next Scrappy Quilt Project - Rick Rack Nines

The Pineapple Blossom block quilt is complete and ready for viewing.  This quilt is composed of 2-inch-wide strips and 3 ½ inch squares and, as previously mentioned, is a free pattern on Bonnie Hunter’s website, www.quiltville.com.  A picture of the completed quilt is shown below.

My next project is called Rick Rack Nines.  This quilt is made by combining neutral 5 inch squares with colorful nine-patch squares and setting them on the diagonal.  This is another Bonnie Hunter pattern which is found in her book called “Adventures with Leaders & Enders” published by Kansas City Star Quilts.

For the uninitiated, a Leader or an Ender is two pieces of fabric sewn together either at the beginning or at the end of a line of chain piecing.  The Leader prevents fabric from becoming caught in the feed dogs at the beginning of a seam of chain piecing.  An Ender is two pieces of fabric sewn together at the end of the chained piece.  The Ender serves as the Leader for the next chain.  This allows for continuous sewing rather than starting fresh with thread tails when starting the next chain.

The fabric in a Leader or Ender can be comprised of squares or rectangles.  These Leaders and Enders are clipped off from the lines of chain piecing and saved until enough are accumulated to create a quilt block.  Bonnie’s book contains patterns for using the small pieces of sewn fabric and the book contains a much better description of what a Leader/Ender is.

A picture of several nine patches sewn together is shown below as a preview of the Rick Rack Nines quilt.

In my last blog I told you about a Block of the Month quilt that I was beginning for myself.  This quilt is called Camper Trailers and is composed of eight blocks, each measuring 14” by 10”, with a different retro camper in each block.  A picture of the Month One Camper is shown below.  Each block is an applique project.

Eventually each quilt will make it to Show & Tell at the Lansing Clippers’ monthly meeting before being donated to this year’s community service project .  If you have questions in the meantime, please contact me.  I haven’t run out of ideas for using fabric scraps yet!
